Bob, thoroughly enjoyed your New Smyrna Beach essay. Great photos too! Canaveral National Seashore is one of my favorite beach destinations in Florida.
Great piece. You made me nostalgic for my version of “old Florida” which is different from my folks’ version. And so glad you got to see an amazing “turtle boil”at second base.
Bob, great article. I remember going with my dad to the Winn Dixie at Aloma and Lakemont (where the Walgreens is now) to get chicken necks to take to the beach to catch blue crabs and on the way home stopping at Norwood's (when it was a shack) and getting the smoked mullet to take with us. It was cool because there was sand on the floor and we didn't have to wear shoes. The tables had shells and items and were covered by a big piece of glass. Close my eyes and I can still taste that smoked mullet on a cracker.
And if anyone is headed to Cedar Key, there at the intersection of Highway 19 and 24 in Otter Creek is Hershel's Quick Stop which is a gas station/convenience store. They have smoked mullet which is as good as it gets. I never come home without getting some and most of the time, it doesn't make it back to WP.
Almost?
Almost makes me miss living in Florida.
I loved this story, Bob. Made me wanna sell our house in the desert and head back home.
Head east, old man, head east ….
Vicarious thrills here, my friend! Spot on!😎
Beats the heck out of no thrills at all

Appreciate it, George. Nice hearing from you. Thanks for reading my stuff…
Was just there last month for a few days, took a walk to spot where the Mafia House was/is..

Turtle boil? Had no idea that’s what it’s called. But how fitting …
Well, you’ve gone and done what few men can do, and that’s make me miss Florida.
Btw, we’ve had some great Mexican mangoes this year — almost on par with yours.
I know you’re a sucker for the sunsets …
Love this, Bob! Your phots are beautiful. Looking forward to our vacay there in August.
Yes! See you at NSB in August …
Deepest sympathies for living in such a place. It’s gotta be tough. Great article - though be careful it doesn’t lead to a sudden population increase.
Beautiful writing
Appreciate it, John. Thanks for reading ...

I might just have to fire up the smoker and get in the mullet mode ...

I’ve stopped there many a time, but never grabbed smoked mullet. That’ll now change …
You have saved me a tank of gas, thank you !!!
Made me homesick.
Get yourself down here, mon ...
On the road to the shore: Titusville ... Dixie Crossroads ... broiled rock shrimp. Eatin' that good should be illegal.
Nothing soothes the soul like a walk on the beach.
You got that right ,,,
