Yes to Queens, No to Kings

With a very happy ending ...
5

Hello, hungry people

What better way to warm up for No Kings Day in downtown Orlando than a Drag Brunch in Winter Park?

A fundraiser for scholarships to technical school. Lots o’mimosas and bawdy humor. A good time had by all.

In these days and times, when other communities are backing off from official recognition, proud of our town for not only endorsing the event, but issuing a proclamation declaring June as Pride Month.

***

And then it was on to the general vicinity of Orlando City Hall …

Where none of the photos I took do the crowd justice. I’m guessing close to 5,000 people. With good signs a’plenty:

***

I didn’t carry a sign.

But I did accept a small American flag from a nice woman who was handing them out.

“Can I give you a few dollars for it?” I asked her.

“No,” she said, “My pet-sitting money will pay for it.”

God bless America.

***

It was hot.

And as much as it was uplifting to be among all the folks who turned out — young folks, old folks, black folks, white folks, all kinds of folks, and more public politeness since I can’t remember when — I am not much of a big-crowd person. Even less so when there is chanting and people shouting on bullhorns.

Am I sounding like an old grump yet? This child of the 60’s who got arrested in the aftermath of the Kent State Massacre?

So be it.

Grumpy. But energized.

***

Me and my people lasted as long as we could, enjoying every moment of it.

At which point, we were especially appreciative that the rally took place in very close proximity to the Grand Bohemian Hotel on Orange Avenue and its excellent bar.

An ice-cold Manhattan.

Uplifting. Energizing.

And might I repeat:

God bless America.
